MENS Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulator

The term MENS is the abbreviation of microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulator.

MENS devices are mainly used for pain relief by athlets suffering from acute pain or muscle tenderness, and they have even proven their value in cosmetic treatment.

Efficacy of MENS

In a study in the 1980s a neurologist found out, that a microcurrent stimulation of acupunctur points for the eye could slow and even stopp the progression of dry and wet AMD (Macular Degeneration).
Other studies have shown the effectiveness of MENS to cure bones and tendon.

The electrical current produced by MENS devices are extreme small (below 1 microampere), while TENS are running at 1 Milliampere.
MENS and TENS devices look very similar. Both are sending electrical current to the body through electrodes positionned on the skin.
However, their forces and functions are different and you should not confuse them.

Sending weak electrical signals into the body is an alternative drug-free treatment for

  • pain
  • wound healing
  • plantar fascitis
  • tendon repair
  • ruptured ligament
  • diabetic neuropathy
  • and even age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

How MENS acts

The electrical current is sended through electrodes, which are placed onto the skin, preferably onto the acupuncture points which are known from the traditional Chinese Medicine. As several studies found out that there must be a coherency between the efficacy of microcurrent and traditional chinese acupuncture.

The biomechanics specialist Pierre Mathieu elaborated the theory that the stimulation by MENS is more in coherence with the body's own circuitry. But the real acting factor may actually be the magnetic fields generated by those currents which would be the same of those derived by the metal acupuncture needles.

MENS are currently tested in the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas in pain control, sleep, depression and PTSD symptomes.
There are many manufacturers of MENS; for professional clinical use as well as for personal use at home.

Microcurrent Device for Cosmetic Treatment

Rejuvenique RJV10KIT Facial Toning Mask Kit

  • Face mask's 26 gold-plated contacts tone skin with light energy pulsation
  • Battery-operated (9-volt battery included)
  • Knob adjusts pulsation intensity to suit individual preference
  • Mask adjusts to fit any face size, both male and female
  • Instruction video tape and contact toning gel included

By delivering a light pulsation from a 9-volt battery (included), the 26 gold-plated contact points inside this facemask gradually tone the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkling. The mask's control unit has a knob that adjusts the pulsation intensity to suit individual preference. Though the mask is made of hard plastic, you can adjust the headband and extend key contact points by rotating them so you can fit the mask to any face size, both male and female.

A booklet clearly explains how to use the mask, and a video is included for additional instruction. The basics, however, are easy to grasp. The 26 contact points cover 12 zones of the face. When it's turned on, the mask activates the contact points in a particular zone for about 20 seconds, and then proceeds though the other 11 zones one by one, repeating the sequence four times. A full treatment takes about 15 minutes, and you may apply two treatments each day. To ensure proper skin interaction, each contact point needs a dab of toning gel. Two ounces of gel are included, but you can purchase more separately, along with additional contact points if the originals wear down. The mask carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
